Word 2007 passed my initial tests on creating large documents, so I've been using it ever since. This has allowed me to continue not-learning LaTeX. This hasn't been a great plan. Word 2007 still crashes a lot, but its recovery is near-perfect. Master documents actually seem to work now as well, so you can keep sections of your document separated, which is very helpful in reducing the amount of work word needs to do.
One thing that has irritated me is the lack of citation styles, but I came across the BibWord website, which adds a IEEE and ACM citation style to Word 2007. Finally!
The word team also have a post on how to create your own citation styles in word 2007.
